"View Once" mode is coming to WhatsApp on iOS and Android. We had already talked about it in July, and now it has been officially confirmed by Facebook. The feature is rolling out to all users of the service starting this week, and represents an alternative way to post photos and videos on the platform.
WhatsApp, how the View Once mode works
The feature remembers the similar media distribution method used on Snapchat, and allows you to send multimedia content such as photos and videos that are deleted as soon as they are seen by the recipient. Unlike Snapchat, however, WhatsApp's View Once mode does not let the sender know if a screenshot of the content has been taken.
The new mode has a double use: first of all, it allows you to send personal or sensitive images or videos, such as written reminders of login credentials or other sensitive content; Furthermore, the View Once mode of WhatsApp allows you to share media without weighing on the recipient's storage unit. Once consulted, in fact, the media sent with the new method will not remain on the device that received them, not occupying valuable that can be destined for something else.
The contents sent with the new modality are indicated with a special icon and the writing Photo, and as soon as their preview is seen it will be modified in a message with the word "Open". Files shared with View Once are protected with end-to-end encryption and may be saved on the platform's servers for a few weeks after being sent, but will not be visible to the team unless the recipient decides to report them. Considering that the recipient can save the content or part of it via screenshots, in the FAQ the company recommends "send photos or videos with the option view once enabled only to trusted contacts".
