The iPhone will replace the identity card and driving licence: here's how it will happen and when

The identity card or even the driving license to show directly on the iPhone. Apple's idea with iOS 15 is precisely this: being able to allow users to no longer have to carry their wallet with the various documents because these can be easily visible and shown to those responsible directly on the screen of their iPhone. Apple announced this news directly during the WWDC 2021 keynote and unfortunately for the moment it will be available exclusively in the USA but we hope that everything can still be implemented in other countries including Italy.

iOS 15: this is how the new feature works

The idea is that you don't always have to carry paper documents with you but simply the iPhone, which in any case is an object that has now become essential in everyday life of users. Hence, iOS15 will allow the information contained in the official document to be stored on the iPhone and shown with the same validity to the authorities or even to the structures that will support this novelty.

How does the system work? The system allows it to work thanks to the iOS 15 software update on the iPhone, which we know will arrive during next autumn for everyone. At this point, a simple scan of the required documents will suffice just as if they were being photographed, and then insert them directly on the smartphone in the appropriate section. Clearly the textual and photographic information must be attached in a clearly visible way so that the Apple algorithm can accurately generate the digital copy of the document inside the iPhone.

iPhone will replace ID card and the licence: here's how it will happen and when

It is understandable that once the photograph of the document has been taken and the digital copy has been generated, the entire documentation will only be visible through the unlocking with biometric authentication, i.e. through the Face ID or even the unlocking code user secret. The documents will therefore be present directly in the iPhone wallet together with the credit and loyalty cards and when necessary they can be shown by simply tapping the on and off button as happens with payments via Apple Pay.

As mentioned at the moment, the use of an identity card and driving license on the iPhone can only be used when iOS 15 is released, which will therefore take place by next autumn. Furthermore, its availability will be the prerogative of the USA and moreover only of some American states (therefore not all) that will want to adhere to this novelty. In this case it will be possible, for example, to use it at airports, where it will therefore be possible to show the boarding pass and identity document directly from the iPhone without having to take out paper documents. The idea and not only is clearly very tempting and certainly is convenient for users who usually use the Apple Wallet. It is to be imagined that the arrival in the USA could be just the beginning and that many other countries could adopt this convenience in the future.
